Obituary

Rolland Buttars age 95, a man who found peace in the quiet beauty of the Afton mountains, passed away after a long and independent life. Born on November 13, 1930, in Lewiston, Utah, Rolland was shaped by his early years working on a dairy farm in Cache Valley. A proud veteran, Rolland joined the United States Army shortly after high school, serving his country with honor during the Korean War. Upon his return, he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce, with whom he shared three children: Terry, Kathy, and Scott. He later welcomed another son, Chad, during his second marriage to Theola. Rolland was a true outdoorsman. Whether he was on horseback, camping under the stars, or hunting in his younger years, he was most at home in nature. However, his greatest passion was fishing. He spent nearly three decades in Afton, Wyoming, choosing the location specifically for its proximity to his favorite fishing spot, Stump Creek. Those who knew him best will remember his "secret talent" as a master Dutch Oven cook. His legendary Dutch Oven chicken and potatoes were the centerpiece of many family gatherings and a cherished tradition among friends. In his later years, Rolland was a familiar face at the local cafe, enjoying his morning coffee and the simple rhythm of town life. Though he valued his privacy, he often expressed deep gratitude for the kindness of the Afton community and the essential support provided by the Veterans Affairs (VA). Rolland’s legacy is one of independence, resilience, and a life lived exactly how he wanted. He will be deeply missed by his children, his extended family, and the many "special folks" in Afton who helped him maintain his independence until the end. Graveside Service will be held Monday, May 11, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. location of Aultorest Memorial Park 836 36th Street, Ogden, Utah 84403.
