Mary
Campbell
Jul 2, 1950 — Oct 5, 2026
Alpine
Friday
Mary Lou Campbell, 76, peacefully departed this life on October 5, 2026, at her home in Alpine, Wyoming, surrounded by her loving husband and family.
Mary was born on July 2, 1950, in Jackson, Wyoming, to Phil and Pauline Baux. The third daughter of Phil and Pauline, Mary enjoyed an eventful and joyful childhood growing up in Jackson Hole. She attended Jackson Elementary School and graduated from Jackson-Wilson High School in 1968.
Shortly after graduation, Mary moved to Denver, Colorado, where she lived for a brief time. When her mother, Pauline, became ill, however, Mary returned home to Jackson to help care for her mother, father, and younger sister. It was an early example of something that would come to define Mary throughout her life: when her family needed her, she was there.
After returning to Jackson, Mary met Robert Lee Campbell, who had recently returned home after serving his country in the Vietnam War. The two fell in love and were married in 1973, beginning a marriage and partnership that would span 53 years.
Mary became a mother in 1975 with the birth of her first child. She and Robert built their life together in Jackson Hole, where their family eventually grew to include three children. Their home was one filled with love, forgiveness, laughter, and happiness, and Mary was always at its heart.
Anyone who knew Mary knew how much she loved the holidays, but Halloween and Thanksgiving held an especially dear place in her heart. She loved the colorful change of the seasons—the brilliant autumn leaves, the decorations, the gathering of family, and the feeling that came with that special time of year. An avid holiday decorator, Mary transformed her home with the seasons, creating a place where her family could gather and where memories were made year after year.
Mary also expressed her love through cooking. Over the years, she passed along cherished recipes and a love of preparing food to her children and grandchildren. Those recipes became more than instructions written on a card or remembered from time spent together in the kitchen; they became part of Mary's legacy. Each time one of her children or grandchildren prepares one of her dishes, a little piece of Mary returns to the kitchen and to the family table.
In that way, the traditions Mary created will continue. Holidays will come, autumn leaves will change, kitchens will once again fill with familiar aromas, and her recipes will be prepared and shared by the generations who follow her. Around those tables, Mary will continue to bring her family together. Though she is no longer physically among us, in those familiar tastes, traditions, stories, and moments together, we are reunited with her in spirit.
In 1994, Mary took on another treasured role when she became a grandmother for the first time. In the years that followed, her family continued to grow with grandchildren and, eventually, great-grandchildren. Through holiday after holiday and ordinary day after ordinary day, Mary cared for her family through their successes, their celebrations, their challenges, and their sorrows. She offered the kind of love that forgave easily, welcomed people home, and remained steadfast through whatever life brought.
Mary remained the heart of her family until the very end.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert Lee Campbell of Alpine, Wyoming; her sister, Cindy (Ronnie) of Victor, Idaho; her children, Kiley (Christina) Campbell and Beau Campbell of Alpine, Wyoming; her grandchildren, Chandler (Syd) of Fort Collins, Colorado, Cassandra (Chris) of Jackson, Wyoming, Josie Campbell of Etna, Wyoming, Shaylee and Rylie Dobben of Hyrum, Utah, Ethan and Ava Campbell of Alpine, Wyoming, and Adri and Rory of North Carolina; as well as several great-grandchildren who will dearly miss her presence in their lives.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Phil and Pauline Baux; her sisters, Jean Davison and Carolyn Brooks; and her youngest son, Lucas Campbell of Alpine, Wyoming.
Mary's life cannot be measured simply by the years between her birth and her passing. It can be measured in the family she nurtured, the home she created, the holidays she made magical, the people she cared for when they needed her, and the generations who will carry her memory forward.
For more than five decades, Mary and Robert built a life together. For more than half a century, she was a wife, a mother, a sister, and eventually a grandmother and great-grandmother. Through all those years and all those roles, one thing remained constant: Mary loved her family, and her family knew they were loved.
That love remains.
