Marjorie Burton
Evans
March 31, 2017
Marjorie Burton Evans passed away Friday, March 31, 2017. Marjorie was born March 25th, 1919 to George Fielding Burton and Mary Francis Poulter Burton in Afton, Wyoming. She is one of three girls and three boys in the family. She was the granddaughter to Wyoming pioneer William Walton Burton. Marjorie's mother, Mary, passed away when she was only eight-years-old, and George was left to raise the large family on his own. Marjorie attended Star Valley High School and graduated in 1937. Some of her hobbies and interests included fishing, bowling, acting, dancing, cheerleading, softball, and tennis. She especially loved tennis and was proud of the fact that she beat Carwin Linford and Lee Call in tennis matches while in high school. Her grandkids all remember learning and playing tennis with Grandma Marge. She played and enjoyed tennis into her eighties. Marge married returning World War II soldier, Lemuel Oscar Evans, in 1942 and they had children Richard Evans and Christine Evans Fullmer. Marjorie soon divorced and moved back to Star Valley with two young children to raise on her own. She worked as a "number, please" operator in downtown Afton for Mountain Bell for a majority of her adult lifetime. She devoted her energy to raising and providing for her children. Marjorie was transferred with her job in 1963 to Salt Lake City, Utah when dial-phones came into operation. Her company, Mountain Bell, was bought by AT&T and she remained working for them for the rest of her career. In SLC, Marjorie loved ball-room dancing, playing tennis, going shopping, and enjoyed the city life. Grandkids and family loved to stay with her in the big city. A movie, going out to eat, and walking around the mall was always a fun day spent with Grandma Marge. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Although presented many challenges in her life, she was devoted to following the basic principles of the Gospel. She was a great example of paying tithing and being committed to doing what was right, even though it was sometimes difficult. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Alva, Claude, and Melvin, and sister, Mary Nield. She is survived by baby sister, Fern Baldwin, son Richard Evans (Linda), and daughter Christine Fullmer (Barry). Marjorie has 7 grandkids, and 14 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great granddaughter.
