Harold Press Stewart's Obituary

Harold Press Stewart passed away Thursday, May 30, 2013, six weeks shy of his 90th birthday. He was born July 11, 1923 to David Levi and Jessie Lamb Stewart in Alamo, Nev. After graduating high school in Alamo, he was called to serve in World War II. Harold was stationed at Numfor, a small island off the coast of New Guinea, where he manned an anti-aircraft gun to protect the mainland base and airfield. He returned to southern Nevada after the war and met Erlene Stock, from Tucson, Ariz., while she was visiting relatives in Alamo. They fell in love and were married on Nov. 26, 1946. Harold and Erlene raised cattle in Alamo and were blessed with three boys and one girl, Val, Dale, Michael and Pam. Harold moved the family to Las Vegas in 1955, where he began working as a construction foreman for his brother, Cyril. Later that year, another son, Tim, was born. He was followed several years later by the youngest son, Brad. While working for Wells and Steward, Harold built roads and dams in Nevada and Arizona. In 1962, Harold and his three brothers, Neil, Alden and Gerald, started Nevada Ready Mix Concrete Company and Nevada Rock and Sand Paving. Las Vegas boomed in the early 1960s and Harold and his brothers were part of building many roads, dams, hotels, commercial buildings and interstate freeways in Arizona, Nevada and Utah. In the summer of 1962, Harold took his family to the Seattle World's Fair and passed through Star Valley on the way. He fell under a spell from its beauty and returned in the spring of 1963. He and his brothers purchased a ranch in the Crow Creek area of Fairview. In 1970, Harold's dream and vision of building a resort in Star Valley became a reality as he embarked on developing Star Valley Ranch. In addition to Star Valley Ranch, Harold developed Star Valley Ranch RV?Resort, Bridger Mountain Estates, Stewart County Club Estates and Bridger View. Harold loved the outdoors and the scouting program. He served for many years as a scout master. He loved horses, hunting, fishing and golf. His love for golf was evident as he built four golf courses in Star Valley Ranch. The last course, Bridger Mountain, was a fulfillment of a bucket list. Harold always said "I want to build one more golf course before I go." He did. All who knew him loved his sense of humor, storytelling, generosity, work ethic and admired his persistence and determination. Harold's greatest accomplishment is his posterity and his role as a father, husband and patriarch. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his sister, Lucinda; his daughter, Pam (Dave) Driscoll; his sons, H. Val (Cathi) Stewart; Dale Steward; Michael (JoAnn) Stewart; Tim (Deb) Stewart; and Brad (Linda) Stewart; 32 grandchildren and 65 great grandchildren. Harold and Erlene's first great great granddaughter will be born in August. Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Erlene Stock Stewart; his mother, Jessie; father, David; sister, Irene; and brothers, Gerald, Cyril, Alden, Neil and Gilbert. A viewing will be held on Friday, June 7 from noon to 1:15 p.m. in the Thayne LDS?Stake Center. Funeral services will be at the same location at 1:30 p.m. Following the funeral, internment will be at the Thayne Cemetery.
