Darrol Fluckiger's Obituary

Darrol T. Fluckiger, of Turnerville, passed away at his home on Mar 25th at the age of 91. Darrol was born and raised in Star Valley. As a farm boy he learned how to work hard and enjoy it.

He graduated from Star Valley High School and a short time later enlisted in the Army Air Corps serving in North Africa and Europe, flying missions on B24 bombers.

Following WWII, Darrol attended Utah State University where he met his soon to be wife, Renee Hiatt of Payson Utah. They raised four boys and two girls, teaching each to love the outdoors and to work hard. Their teaching method was not just to tell them, but to show them by example.

After graduating with a degree in Forestry, Darrol went to work for the Forest Service, serving at different times as the Forest Ranger over the Targee and the Bridger National Forests. Few men know these mountains as well as Darrol does. Darrol's specialties included Range Management and Fire Fighting, including a stint of teaching at the smoke jumpers school in Missoula, MT.

When he could find time, he liked to spend it outdoors with the family fishing or hunting. You always liked to go with dad because he always (almost) got what he went after.

Retiring from the Forest Service, Darrol returned to Star Valley and built a home on the family's original homestead. He cut down the trees needed and had them sawed up in order to build his retirement home. Over the course of a few years he completed the home where they have lived ever since.

After completing their home, Darrol and Renee filled a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints in the Southern California mission making a lot of new friends, many of whom have since visited them here in the Valley.

Darrol has been active in the Boy Scouts most of his life, receiving the Silver Beaver Award for his dedication. There are numerous Eagle Scouts who would not hesitate to tell you about their adventures with Darrol.

Darrol is survived by his wife Renee, sons JD Fluckiger of Richland, WA, Blaine Fluckiger of Billings, MT, Jeff Fluckiger of Rexburg, ID, Marc Fluckiger of Magna, UT; daughters Linda Messer of Rexburg, ID, and LeeAnn Blair of St. Anthony, ID.; 26 grandchildren and 63 great grandchildren, and 2 great great granddaughters.

The funeral will be held in the Bedford LDS Chapel on Monday the 30th of March at 11:00 AM. Viewings will be from 6-8 Sunday evening the 29th at the Schwab Funeral Home in Thayne and from 10 AM until 10:45 AM Monday at the Bedford Chapel.
